Bomb squad called in after military shell found in shed

POLICE in Stanthorpe have found a large military shell from the 1940s in a car shed.

Officers were called to a Stanton St residence in relation to the location of a "suspicious" looking item found in a car shed while it was being cleaned out on Monday June 15.

Initial inquiries undertaken with Police Bomb Squad Technicians in Brisbane determined the item was most likely an old piece of military ordinance and the military were subsequently called; attending to examine and collect the item.

It was determined that the item - a large shell - was in fact military ordinance from the 1940s that had been fired and then modified, which didn't assist the initial identification.

In this instance and despite there being no immediate threat, the item was seized by army personnel for training purposes and eventual destruction.
