Police: Lock it lose it this Christmas

ROCKHAMPTON police will be out in force this weekend to enforce the 'Lock it or Lose it' message.

From December 10-11, police will actively patrol Rockhampton shopping centres and major car parks to ascertain if residents are leaving their vehicles secured or leaving valuable items on display.

With the holiday season in full swing, many people are heading to local shopping centres to buy gifts and according to insurance companies' research shoppers often leave their Christmas shopping in their cars, providing an easy target for thieves.

In the 2015/16 period, over 30% of the vehicles that were stolen or broken into in the Central Police Region were either not locked or had key left inside the vehicle.

To keep your gifts and cars safe these holidays, Rockhampton police encourage residents to put all gifts and items of value in the boot or conceal them, lock vehicles and roll-up windows, park in a well lit area at night or if using underground car parks, do not leave gifts in the car overnight if you do not have a secure garage and avoid unloading gifts and leaving your car in the same parking spot as car thieves often watch for shoppers that drop presents off and head back into the store.

Police also encourage residents to check their insurance policies for both car and home to clarify whether car insurance will cover the cost of stolen gifts.

As a last resort you can also check with your credit card provider to see if they offer purchase security which may cover your losses.

Rockhampton Police would like to wish everyone the best in the lead up to Christmas.
