Police manhunt fails to catch suspect in shootings
UPDATE: An extensive manhunt was launched around Toowoomba as police zeroed in on a man with possible links to recent shootings in the city.
Parts of Kearneys Spring were locked down as the man, known to police and wanted in relation to a number of offences, fled from officers acting on information following a vehicle that failed to stop.
The man fled from a suspect vehicle after it was intercepted by officers in Kearneys Spring, sparking a large-scale manhunt that stretched from the suburbs to around the Toowoomba Hospital.
Darling Downs Detective Inspector Dave Isherwood said the man was wanted by police on a number of outstanding matters.
Toowoomba Tactical Crime, the police dog squad, plain clothe detectives and Criminal Investigation Branch officers cordoned off parts of the suburb with marked police cars checking all vehicles in the area for more than 30 minutes in an effort to catch the offender.
"It was an intensive search for a prolific offender," Det. Insp. Isherwood said.
"Police went to intercept a vehicle (and) that vehicle has stopped and decamped."
The offender, believed to be 22 years old and of a slim build and average height, flagged down a passing motorist on Ruthven St claiming he needed help to get to the hospital.
The couple complied and it was only after talking with police they realised he had been on the run from the law.
Det. Insp. Isherwood said police were working to determine if the offender had any links to recent shootings in Toowoomba.
Det. Insp. Isherwood said anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
