Police officer on assault charge appears in court

A POLICE officer charged with assault has made his first appearance before Toowoomba Magistrates Court.

Matthew Shawn Lewis appeared in court with his lawyer Craig Pratt (Gilshenan & Luton Legal Practice) for the brief mention of the matter yesterday.

The 39-year-old senior constable was not required to enter any plea to the charge of assault occasioning bodily harm.

No details of the alleged incident were aired in court but it is believed the charge arises from an alleged altercation in the Toowoomba Police Station watch house on New Year's Day.

Mr Pratt said he was seeking an adjournment so a police brief of evidence could be compiled and handed to the defence.

Magistrate Damian Carroll therefore remanded the defendant on bail and adjourned the case for hearing mention back in the same court on April 26.
