Police plead for care as four killed in 24 hours on CQ roads

AFTER a devastating weekend on Central Queensland roads, police are urging drivers to stay alert behind the wheel.

Four people were killed in three accidents within 24 hours of each other on Friday and Saturday, at Moranbah, the Gemfields and Rolleston.

Inspector operations for the Central Police Region Marcus Hill said accidents like these took a great toll on local communities.

"It's shocking for a weekend road toll for the small community involved," he said.

"The one at Rolleston involved international tourists, so while the victims of the crash weren't local, the people responding definitely are local -the ambulance, police, fire and SES. They're impacted.

"In Sapphire it was a local gentleman with a local family, so there will be a huge impact on such a small community."

The causes of the Sapphire and Rolleston accidents are still under investigation, and Inspector Hill said it could be quite some time before results are finalised, as mechanical inspections would need to be carried out.

He said this was a strong reminder for people to take care on the roads.

"In single vehicle accidents distraction is a huge factor, with people just zoning out," he said.

"Most single vehicle accidents can be avoided. Only on a few occasions are they caused by mechanical defects or defects with the road. It's normally because someone made a poor choice."

He urged drivers to be conscious of the "fatal five".

"They have to take their regular breaks," he said. "Another five or 10 minutes is not going to add much more to journey and it could be the difference in getting there safely."
