Probe into Boxing Day death
POLICE late yesterday afternoon charged a Rockhampton man, 40, with manslaughter after the death of a man who had earlier been discovered unconscious at a unit in Berserker.
The unconscious man died shortly afterwards at Rockhampton Hospital.
Police had found the 51-year-old at a unit in Hook St about 1am.
A 40-year-old man, who spent much of yesterday being questioned by police, was charged in the afternoon with one count of manslaughter and is due to appear in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court today.
While details of how the death unfolded were not released yesterday, Central region crime coordinator Detective Inspector Cal Lynch said an autopsy on the dead man was likely to be performed this morning which would provide more information.
Det Insp Lynch confirmed the men were known to each other.
It's understood someone at the scene called the authorities.
Alcohol had been consumed during the night at the unit, police said.
"Police are making further investigations as to who was in attendance at the time and during the course of the night," Det Insp Lynch said.
Some residents in the street were yesterday morning seemingly unaware of any incident overnight and woke to find the unit taped off and police on scene.
They said Hook St was normally a quiet area.
A police car stayed at the unit all day.
While police have notified the family of the deceased, his name was not released publicly yesterday.
