Police warn of lurking post-floods scammers

RESIDENTS have been warned to watch out for scammers, trawling the Moreton Bay district for unsuspecting and vulnerable victims post-floods.

Times of hardship bring out the best and unfortunately the worst of people as police warn of scammers trying to get money out of locals following last Friday's flood event.

Redcliffe police are aware of an incident in which a Deception Bay woman received a phone call earlier this week from a man claiming to be from the Department of Communities.

The man advised the woman she was entitled to several thousands of dollars in flood relief funds.

"The man, who knew the woman's name, asked her for personal information including bank account details. She was absolutely wise to hang up," Inspector Lee Jeffries said.

Inspector Jeffries said it is easy enough for people to find out the names of the people they are calling, making the call sound more legitimate.

"I would remind the community not to provide any personal details, especially bank or credit card details, without independently verifying the bona fides of the caller," he said.

"Unfortunately, following events such as last Friday's terrible storm and flood, some people are willing to try and take advantage of people when they are most vulnerable," Inspector Jeffries said.

The Department of Communities 'Community Recovery Hotline' is 1800 543 354, with the Department advising that its staff would not 'cold call' people to discuss flood relief payments.

Anyone who received a suspicious phone call should contact their local police or call Policelink on 131 444.
