Powerlifter flies out to Russia for battle of champs

IT'S been a rollercoaster couple of weeks for Rockhampton powerlifter Odell Manuel.

Despite his original visa application being declined, the Australian heavyweight will fly out to Russia today to compete in the country's Battle of Champions powerlifting tournament.

Odell was supposed to leave on Sunday, but some problems with his visa paperwork saw him grounded.

"I could have applied for another visa and changed my flights but I didn't have the money to do that," he said yesterday.

"Then the organisers contacted me and said they would pay the difference."

Odell said his focus shifted to the Australian Championships when he thought he was unable to go to Russia.

"I had already moved on," he said.

"But now I'm back on the job again and I'm excited. I've never been to Russia. It should be a great experience."

Odell will compete on Saturday.
