Prime Minister says binge-drinking culture appalling

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has weighed into the growing national debate around alcohol-fuelled violence, saying he was appalled by the "violent binge drinking culture that now seems so prevalent".

Mr Abbott made the comments in an opinion piece across national media.

He wrote that hospital emergency departments should not be "overflowing with the victims of substance abuse every Friday and Saturday night" and urged the police and courts to deal "very severely" with the unprovoked attacks.

While the Federal Government does not have direct responsibility for the frontline services most affected by alcohol-fuelled violence, he wrote that the problem was "an issue that communities are facing in suburbs and regional centres across Australia".

While his public comments did not include promises to increase funding to the states to deal with the problem, he wrote that the Commonwealth "stands ready to work with the states, parents and communities to tackle this scourge".
