Prisoner charged with murder

A 25-YEAR-old convicted prisoner has been charged with murder following the death of an inmate at the Capricornia Correctional Centre on Wednesday.

Ryan Edward Dwyer allegedly killed Jayde Biddulph, 30, after an altercation early in the morning.

The prisoners were known to each other and lived in Gladstone before their incarceration for separate offences.

Dwyer isn’t due to be released until February 2011.

Biddulph had been serving a six month sentence for a breaking and entering charge.

Yesterday Dwyer appeared in Rockhampton Magistrates Court after being formerly charged with murder late Thursday night.

He was escorted into the courtroom dock by two police officers and sat with his head bowed throughout the brief proceedings.

Defence solicitor Shayne Studdert called for a brief of evidence to be compiled, but said there was no time urgency because Dwyer wasn’t due for release on his current sentence until 2011.

No application for bail was made. Police detectives are still reviewing autopsy results.

They have spent the last three days interviewing prison staff and inmates.

Dwyer will reappear on March 23 at 2pm.
