Prisoner escapes for 8 hours

A PRISONER who escaped a low security work camp last night will be returned to Capricornia Correctional Centre north of Rockhampton this morning.

Anthony Morgan Clarke absconded from the work camp at Blackall, 680km west of Rockhampton.

The 23-year-old was reported missing at the 7pm headcount yesterday.

A Corrective Services spokesperson said "a search of the area failed to locate him".

Clarke was recaptured more than eight hours later.

Police caught him on Tambo Road near Blackall around 3.15am.

Clarke is serving a sentence of five years and six months for robbery with actual violence, breaking and entering and willful damage offences.

His full time release date had been set at April 2012.

The Chief Inspector of Prisons will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Clarke and the 13 other prisoners at the Blackall work camp will be returned to secure custody at the Capricornia Correctional Centre.
