The pros and cons of online shopping and selling of goods

THE online world can be really scary.

Not just talking to strangers on dating websites and giving them personal details.

Purchasing goods and/or services online can be scary because there are some avenues of buying/selling/trading that provide no guarantee you get what you paid for (or money back).

And then there is the issue of products only being available for people to pick up. You wouldn't invite strangers into your house on any normal day, so why would you invite them to pick up a product?

This is when you arrange a public place meeting to swap good/s for cash.

Then there are the stories of people buying expensive items through sites like eBay or Gumtree and the product doesn't turn up, at all.

There was one mate who was really excited about finding a motorbike on eBay for the price he wanted to pay, including transport, but when the motorbike didn't turn up, he struggled to get any assistance from the online website, police or other legal avenues.

He was out of pocket $10,000 which it had taken him years to save up.

After talking to people, and asking readers of The Morning Bulletin, for their pros and cons of online shopping, I've compiled this list:

Pros:

  • Better choice - more variety of colours, sizes, etc
  • Cheaper prices - many say they find prices are 1/2 to 1/3 of price being charged in shops
  • Whole world of shopping available
  • Paypal is very user friendly
  • Can't find what you want locally so online shopping is the only way to go

Cons:

  • Items may not be as described
  • Items may be broken or lost in the post
  • Sellers can disappear and take your cash
  • Buyers can rock up to your place for the goods and be there to case the joint for break and enter later

What do you think are the pros and cons of online shopping?

What scares you the most?
