Protest follows train stabbings

DOZENS of weapons were seized and 14 people were arrested when thousands of demonstrators and counter protesters faced off near City Hall in Portland, Oregon on Sunday.

A week after two Portland men were fatally stabbed on a train as they stood up to a man shouting anti-Muslim insults at two teenage girls, the Trump Free Speech Rally was attended by hundreds who were well outnumbered by anti-Trump and anti-hate protesters.

It was mostly peaceful but police used stun grenades and pepper spray to disperse a group hurling bricks and rocks at officers.

The man arrested over the train stabbings, Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, attended a similar rally in late April wearing a US flag around his neck and carrying a baseball bat.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler had tried to rescind a permit for the pro-Trump rally, saying he feared violence after the killings.
