Protesters join MPs in parliament's first day back

QUEENSLAND'S politicians were not the only ones who returned to Parliament House on Tuesday.

Anti-Adani protesters called on the government to place a moratorium on future coalmines and withdraw Adani's mining and water licences.

Green protests against the controversial mine were a constant during the October election campaign, but fewer rallies were held between polling day and parliament's resumption on Tuesday.

The protesters used drums and chants to try to make themselves heard inside Parliament house.

Catholic Justice and Peace Commission and Stop Adani Brisbane representative Peter Arndt said the mine would threaten jobs rather than creating them.

"Adani's mine proposal threatens the existing jobs of tens of thousands of Queenslanders working in reef tourism. It will put farmers' and graziers' livelihoods at risk by potentially damaging the integrity and security of groundwater,” he said.

"Economists also predict that, ironically, the mine would kill off existing coal jobs in Queensland and shift employment away from other sectors, such as manufacturing.” -NewsRegional
