Prowler stalks scout den

POLICE have lodged an intelligence report after a man was found at a Highfields Scout camp in possession of boy’s underpants.

Wirraglen camp caretaker Fred Swanson said he was walking his dog on Tuesday night when he noticed a torch light shining from inside one of the scout buildings at 8.50pm on Tuesday.

Mr Swanson went to investigate and found a pair of men’s boots and a pair of boy’s underpants placed on the footpath.

Mr Swanson walked to his caretaker’s cottage to call police, scout officials, and get his keys.

He noticed a beige, new model Toyota dual cab utility parked near the fence of the camp.

When he arrived back at the scout camp 10 minutes later the man’s boots and underpants were gone.

Two of the scout buildings, including the den where children sleep, had been entered.

No children were at the camp at the time of the incident.

The utility left while Mr Swanson was talking with police on site.

Mr Swanson said the scouts had cleaned out the buildings after Christmas and there were no children’s underpants on site — meaning the man had brought them with him.

Nothing appears to have been stolen.

“Police thought it may have been a sexual deviate,” Mr Swanson said.

“My wife and I didn’t get much sleep last night.”

A set of keys to the scout buildings were lost by another official last year.

Mr Swanson believes the offender may have used a key to enter the buildings as the doors had been locked at the time.

There were no signs of forced entry and the offender left two doors unlocked.

Toowoomba police have spoken with the owner of the utility.

Officers have submitted an intelligence report in relation to the man’s activities.

Members of the public who observe suspicious behaviour are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
