UPDATE 12PM: Police are hunting a man who stormed a country pub at the weekend brandishing a large-bladed knife before taking off with a large amount of cash.

Employees and locals at the Rising Sun Hotel, at Rosewood, west of Ipswich, were still coming to terms with the robbery on Monday - shocked their small pub had once again been thrust into the headlines for the wrong reasons.

Publican Darren Pettiford told the Queensland Times he did not expect a phone call late on Sunday evening from a staff member to say the pub had been robbed.

He said the robbery was all over within about 40 seconds.

"The guy came into the TAB area and started tapping a bloody big knife on the counter," he said.

"He told the bartender to fill up the bag with money.

Mr Pettiford said his employee did the right thing especially because there were families eating in the restaurant at the time.

He said it was the first armed robbery he had heard of in the region for a long time.

"The money can be replaced but a person's life cannot," he said.

"We all work hard for our money and for some grub to just take it is extremely disappointing.

"The guy knew what he was doing - if he did not hit us, he would have just gone to another pub in town."

Ipswich Criminal Investigation Branch's Senior Sergent Heath McQueen said the robbery was unusual for the area.

He said investigations were continuing.

"About 8.20pm the man entered the establishment and proceeded to a bar area where he threatened a male employee before stealing a sum of cash," he said.

"The man is described as Caucasian, approximately 175 to 180cms tall, with a solid build.

"He was wearing a dark shirt, dark pants and had his head covered by a dark item of clothing.

"He was last seen running toward Rosewood station."

The pub made national headlines in January 2008 when two men brutally bashed and stabbed to death the hotel's chef in an upstairs room.

Raymond John Bound and Lochlan-Lee Brett Belford were found guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court in 2009 of murdering Wayne Williams, 28, and sentenced to life behind bars.
