Pummell is best of bay sailors
SAILING: Jonathon Pummell cruised home to secure second in the Queensland State Youth Sailing Championships yesterday.
Keppel Bay Sailing Club hosted the Youth Sailing event at the weekend, with Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast youngsters showcasing their talent on the water.
With weather conditions changing regularly throughout the event, Keppel Bay Sailing Club committee member Bruce Sagnol said the competitors got a taste of both rough and smooth sailing.
"The kids have had some really widespread weather conditions and the sailing has been really good," Sagnol said.
The club also hosted a youth development camp throughout the week, with Sagnol saying it went off without a hitch.
"The whole week of racing and coaching has been very successful and well supported," he said.
Our best Rockhampton and Yeppoon talent came in Pummell who took second place in the Sabot class behind Brisbane's Ben Markey and ahead of Brisbane's Joshua Cox.
Keppel Bay Sailing Club member Dane Bolder secured a fifth position in the Sabot 1Up, and fellow members joining him in the top 12 were Kelly Tansey in seventh and Seamus Byrt in 11th.
In the Sabot 2Up, Keppel Bay Sailing Club's Deklan Bulder sailed into fourth position on his boat, Robinhood II.
While the Sabot division boasted strong local numbers, the Laser Radial division saw domination from the south with Noosa's Hayden Johnson taking first, Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron competitors Hannah O'Brien and Emily Carstairs taking second and third placings, with Keppel Bay Sailing Club competitor Blake Newton taking fifth.
