Push for convention centre

ALL tiers of government need to come together if a convention centre and stadium for Rockhampton were to go ahead, according to the Labor candidate for Capricornia.

Leisa Neaton told The Bulletin she's willing to be a "team player" when it comes to attracting funding for the region to secure jobs.

The proposed development of Rockhampton's first convention centre gained further traction at Friday's Regional Priority Projects Forum last week.

In a move that would guarantee work and economic growth for the region, adding a convention centre would both improve the city's appeal and allow talks of a stadium set-up to begin.

However, CQ NRL bid chairman Geoff Murphy said it was disappointing to see the region struggling to secure money for that project.

"Just for starters, a convention centre would have an enormous benefit for the region as we have no way of holding things for a 300-plus crowd. Our facilities are very poor," Mr Murphy said.

Ms Neaton replied to Mr Murphy's comments by stating that the key to securing infrastructure and event funding is for all levels of government to talk often to be sure there is a clear and united future plan.

"I agree with Mr Murphy that we need to be able to secure funding for new projects to bring an economic boost to our area and create jobs and growth," Ms Neaton said.

"Several projects are being raised with me as the Labor candidate for Capricornia, including the Eden Bann and Rookwood Dam water security project, the possibility of attaining international status for our Rockhampton airport to open up better access to Asian markets for agriculture and tourism, and the expansion of the allied health clinic at the university in Rockhampton."

Ms Neaton said there were plenty of examples in the region where all levels had come together for a successful outcome, including the recurrent Beef Australia event, the Second World War Memorial Aquatic Centre rebuild and the Yeppen South Project.
