Push on for Hidden Valley Rd-Hoskyn Dve route

A LINKING road between Yeppoon's Hidden Valley Rd and Hoskyn Dve is at the top of Livingstone Shire's major projects list for next year.

Livingstone Shire Council, with support from Keppel MP Brittany Lauga and Capricornia MP Michelle Landry, has put forward an application to the Federal Government for funds for the project, which is estimated to cost close to $1 million and be announced by mid-next year.

Livingstone Mayor Bill Ludwig said there was always a plan to have the linkage through to Hoskyn Dve but the project couldn't be delayed any longer.

"There's been fatalities, injuries, near-misses and a number of accidents at that intersection between Hidden Valley Rd and Rockhampton-Yeppoon Rd," Cr Ludwig said.

"We put this application forward as our one and only Black Spot funding application because we wanted it to stand alone as it's our highest priority.

"It's just under $1 million to get the link happening but it's an absolute necessity and it's been referred and recommended to the government by Main Roads so we're confident we'll be successful.

"Sometimes the government will announce the funding but the funds won't be received until the next financial period which will be a six-month delay if that happens and that's not acceptable.

"This project needs to happen sooner rather than later so we're going to ask both the State and Federal government that if the funding is approved to either bring the funding forward urgently or let council commence the works in advance of the funds being transferred so we can get that project happening."

Mrs Lauga has ramped up the campaign to realign the local road network after recent discussions with Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey.

"I have told the Minister and his department how important this project is to our local community," Mrs Lauga said.

"The Federal Government has guaranteed at least 50% of Black Spot funding over the next two years will be dedicated to fixing roads in regional Australia, so I'm confident that if we can get the project listed then we will be well placed to go on and get it funded and fixed."

The extension of Hoskyn Dve through to Hidden Valley Rd will allow the closure of direct access from Rockhampton-Yeppoon Rd into Hidden Valley Rd.

Council will also discuss the potential to reduce the speed limit on the road from 80km to 70km with Main Roads.
