Queensland correctional officers face prisoner blowout

NEWLY revealed figures have shown Queensland's prison officers are becoming increasingly outnumbered by a booming prisoner population, with the officer-to-prisoner ratio gap widening in the past year.

When asked in August about prison staffing, Queensland Corrective Services did not provide numbers and instead offered a one-sentence response.

"Queensland Corrective Services consistently matches resources to a risk, ensuring appropriate staffing levels across its centres," a spokeswoman said in August.

Fairfax Media has obtained the internal correspondence regarding its original query through Right to Information legislation.

The documents reveal the number of custodial correctional officers increased by just 9.8 per cent between June 30, 2013 and June 30, 2014, from 1753 to 1925.
