Queensland small business most pessimistic in nation

QUEENSLAND'S small and medium businesses are among the most pessimistic in Australia, according to a new report, which found business confidence across the state had slumped.

The latest Sensis Business Index, which surveyed 1000 businesses across the nation, including 100 in metropolitan Queensland and 83 in the regions, found the sunshine state's business community had a less than sunny view of the last quarter.

The survey, taken in March, after the change of government, found Queensland businesses had the second worst levels of confidence in the nation, just behind South Australia and well below the national average. Businesses in New South Wales were the most optimistic.

"The biggest concerns centred around lack of work or sales, particularly in Queensland where sales performance was the worst, while the economic climate, not surprisingly, also factored high on their list of concerns," Sensis chief John Allan said.

"...Key reasons outlined for the results in the survey were that the SMBs didn't believe the new government understood small business and were worried about costs increasing."
