RACQ urges: Say 'pass' to passing this weekend

THE STATE'S peak motoring body has urged motorists to be patient this long weekend and avoid taking unnecessary risks on the road. RACQ's Lauren Ritchie said with heavy traffic expected over the weekend, drivers needed to keep their cool. "Congestion can test the patience of the calmest drivers but frustration is never an excuse to take risks, especially unnecessary overtaking," Ms Ritchie said. "Be patient and go with the flow. If there is a passing lane in a few kilometres it is safer to wait until then to make your move. "When it's safe to overtake, drivers need to look ahead and see whether it's worth it and whether there's enough room to do so safely. "It doesn't make sense to take risks passing other vehicles when you might only save seconds on your journey." Ms Ritchie said courtesy played a large part in ensuring everyone arrived at their destination safely. "Be considerate of other drivers. If you are a slower vehicle, keep in the left hand lane and pull over if you can to let other drivers pass," she said A reminder of the road rules when overtaking:
  • You must not overtake unless you have a clear view of the approaching traffic. Don't overtake on bends or crests.
  • You must not overtake unless you can do so safely and line markings permit it
  • Once you've overtaken another vehicle, you must not return to the lane until you have gone far enough past the vehicle to avoid being an obstruction or having a collision with the vehicle.
