Local meets cancelled due to rain

THE savage beating the Rockhampton area has had from the remnants of Cyclone Olga will take its toll on sport in the district over the next week.

While many codes are holding off making the call to cancel, Speedway got in early and decided that Saturday night’s meeting at the Rockhampton Showgrounds is off.

Rockhampton Saloon Car Club spokesman Mark Hogan said it was in the interests of not only drivers but also spectators to make the decision early.

With so much rain already received and the weather forecast for the next few days giving little scope for optimism, the club could not see the window of opportunity required to prepare the track and for the surrounds to dry out.

“The surrounds need to be dry as people don’t want to sit in two inches (5cm) of water,” Hogan said.

Hogan said it is not just the track and spectator surrounds but also the pit area needed to be in good condition.

It is wait-and-see time for the greyhounds with the Rockhampton Greyhound Club waiting until tomorrow morning before making a decision.

Treasurer Ray Pike said the club needed time to prepare the Callaghan Park track and to gauge whether trainers from outlying areas were able to get their dogs to the track.

Tonight’s football trial match between Berserker and the Capricorn Cougars has a question mark over it. Berserker’s manager Barney Caruana said the Elizabeth Park pitch had taken a real soaking and he doubted it could recover in time for the game.

No such problems for the rugby union showpiece on Saturday at Rugby Park.

Brahmans coach Jack Lloyd junior said the match between the Brahmans and President’s XV should be on unless there was sustained heavy rain.

The first race for the Frenchville Frogs Triathlon for 2010 is also at risk to be cut after king tides hit the Capricorn Resort this week.

Both the representative and club cricket games this weekend are also on watch to be cancelled.

Todd Wells said the final decision would be made on Friday.

Keep up-to-date with the latest weather information for Rockhampton and surrounds.
