THE sun came out on Friday at Winton for just long enough to allow for a frenetic end to the second Supercars practice session.
Nick Percat made the most of the drying line to set the fastest time as the chequered flag waved, his No.8 Freightliner Holden armed with so little fuel that he ran out before he could get back to the pits.
Scott McLaughlin and David Reynolds rounded out the top three after an eventful session that included multiple stoppages as cars slipped off the treacherously wet track.
Earlier, Ford driver Scott McLaughlin overcame the slippery conditions to be the fastest driver in a rain-marred opening Supercars practice session at Winton.
The DJR Team Penske driver topped the practice times with his 1:43.36 lap ahead of Nissan's Todd Kelly and Prodrive Racing's Cameron Waters.
Rick Kelly and Red Bull's defending champion Shane van Gisbergen rounded out the top five.
Drivers struggled to keep their cars on the track in the soaking rain at the country Victorian track.
McLaughlin said the conditions were testingLive: Rain leaves Supercars stars in a spin.
"It was at the end there, it was sketchy," McLaughlin said.
"Going down the front straight I was basically aqua-planing from the last corner all the way down to turn three.
"I knew the car was okay. I just didn't want to get any dents on it."
Cars frequently slid off the slick surface during the 45-minute session.
Turn one was the biggest culprit, with drivers locking up and spearing through the grass before rejoining on the run to turn three.
The biggest victim was Scott Pye, whose Mobil 1 HSV Commodore suffered session-ending rear damage when Nick Percat spun and made contact just 10 minutes in.
Percat said the track was "just so icy" when explaining his contact with Pye.
"I put my foot on the brake and it locked," he said. "Unfortunately Scotty was there.
"I thought 'there's more expensive stuff at the front of it like an airbox, radiator and all that', so I thought the driver's door is the best option for us (to make contact with).
"Once the wheel has locked you're not slowing down the car any more ... you're just a passenger.
"The new surface, I think the oil is coming out the tar now so it's like we're on ice."
Alex Rullo escaped damage from what was arguably the most spectacular off, flying through the turn one infield at high speed in the early stages.
