Rapist to pay niece $5000

A MAN who committed “a litany of sexual crimes” against young boys and girls in his family has been ordered to pay $5000 to one of his victims.

The man, in this case, violently raped his niece, now 34, at a Yeppoon home when she was five or six.

Maroochydore District Court heard the man was in jail and would “be there for some time” because of the number of victims.

Judge John Robertson said because the crime was committed in the 1980s, before the current compensation scheme came in, the maximum the woman could be awarded for her psychological injuries was $5000.

He said the woman, who suffered chronic post traumatic stress disorder, would have been entitled to a figure close to the maximum $75,000 under the current scheme.

He praised her legal team for working pro bono on the case.
