Raw chocolate provides healthy Easter alternative
IT CAN be a challenge over Easter to avoid the hoards of mass-produced unhealthy chocolates in their seductive shiny foil.
But Kirra restaurant Greenhouse Factory expects to be busy over the weekend offering an alternative indulgence to the processed, sugar-packed eggs.
Last Saturday, Factory owner Natalie Evans and Lovechild online boutique founder Abbey Jones combined their love of food, fashion and animal welfare to raise money for a handful of charities.
One of the major sponsors was vegan raw chocolate brand Pana, which they sell at the restaurant.
Ms Evans said she expected plenty of people to indulge in the handmade, healthy raw chocolate.
She said it was a blessing for people living a cruelty-free lifestyle to enjoy the indulgent side of Easter without sacrificing their tastebuds.
"I don't need it to be Easter to enjoy chocolate, it's a daily thing for me," Ms Evans said.
But with high-quality vegan options available, she said it made that indulgence, whether on Easter or any day of the year, a lot easier.
"Now I think we live in a day and age when there's a vegan substitute for everything," she said.
Ms Evans said as the founder of Pana was vegan, the chocolate line had been created to be suitable for all dietary requirements.
She said they had received an overwhelming response from Saturday night's fundraiser, which also launched Greenhouse's own clothing line that will soon be available through Lovechild.
Ms Jones said she was thrilled the event inspired some people to live a more cruelty-free lifestyle.
"The response was amazing," Ms Jones said.
Proceeds from the event went to Free Hearts Animal Sanctuary in Tasmania, the Association for the Protection of Fur Bearing Animals and Guardians of the Voiceless in India.
At the time of printing, they were still calculating the amount of funds raised.
