READER'S VIEW: impossible to unscramble landlords rates

MR McMILLAN in The Morning Bulletin on Monday, October 26, was quoted as saying that if elected as Mayor of Rockhampton, he would abolish the extra rates imposed on landlords.

This is all very well until put into practice.

My question to Mr McMillan is, how is he going to ensure that the people who really carry the burden of this extra rate impost going to see the benefit of it, as the extra cost in most cases has been passed onto the tenants and it will be hard to expect the landlords to drop their rents after their operational incomes are and have been set for so long.

The gesture has merit, however in practice would become very unwieldy, as it should have never been implemented in the first place.

In essence, it is impossible to unscramble an egg and the only victim in this whole unfortunate mess is the tenant, who in most cases can ill afford to carry this expense.
