Mother of one still in an induced coma after electrical blast

THE woman who suffered severe burns during an electrical accident at the Aurizon railway workshops in Redbank remains in a critical condition in Royal Brisbane Hospital.

The 33-year-old woman is a fourth-year apprentice and was working with a supervisor on a substation at the site when the accident occurred.

She has been confirmed as a mother of one.

She and her male colleague, employed by Aurizon, were working on an electrical substation, when the woman sustained severe burns from an electric shock.

It is believed the woman received burns to 50% of her body and was taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital in a critical condition.

Investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.

The QT understands the incident involved a switch on the substation.

The woman was placed in a medically induced coma on Thursday night.

Her condition had not changed yesterday.

The male employee, who was with the woman, was treated for burns.

His injuries are believed to have been caused by flames emanating from the substation.

He was also taken to the Royal Brisbane Hospital on Thursday with minor burns to his hands.

He was released later in the afternoon.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and paramedics arrived at the Weedman St site at 11.20am and notified police.

The incident was initially reported as an explosion.

Workplace health and safety and the Office of Electrical Safety carried out inspections at the site after the incident.
