REESE Witherspoon's career has never been better but a mere five years ago, plenty of people were calling time on the popular actress.

The 41-year-old's Hollywood career spans close to three decades and includes an Academy Award for Best Actress, but winning the highest honour in the acting world complicated things.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter for their Awards Chatter Podcast, Witherspoon opened up about how her Oscar win for playing June Carter Cash in the 2005 movie Walk The Line was the most confusing part of her career.

"I won the Oscar and I felt really confused about what to do next," she said, referring to her 2006 win.

"I had paralysis - Oscar-induced paralysis," she added.

Following Walk The Line, Witherspoon did a number of reasonably successful, mixed reviewed movies but nothing on the same level of her Oscar win.

Her peculiar career choices were detrimental to her career as she saw herself drop from the exclusive highest-paid actress list to out of the spotlight - all of which culminated into many claiming Witherspoon's career was over.

A 2012 article from the New Yorker even went as far as declaring the then-36-year-old actress a has-been.

"Plenty of people who were big stars 10 years ago now are not," author Tad Friend wrote, referring to Witherspoon - a comment that did not sit well with the actress.

"Someone in The New Yorker said that I was 'a has-been' or my career was over, and I remember thinking - how old was I in 2012, like 36? - I was like, 'Wow, that's brutal!' That really bugged me," she told THR.

But in the wake of producing and starring in the blockbuster show Big Little Lies - never mind her Oscar nod for 2014 movie Wild - Witherspoon is back with a vengeance.

The actress is now in talks to create a second season for Big Little Lies, is returning to TV to co-star in an untitled show with Jennifer Aniston and is also finishing up filming for the highly-anticipated 2018 Disney movie A Wrinkle In Time.

And despite Witherspoon getting her groove back, she's also the first one to admit her career was in dire straits for a while, telling CBS Newsin 2014 her career "floundered" after Walk The Line.

"I got divorced the next year and I spent, you know, a few years just trying to feel better. You know, you can't really be very creative when you feel like your brain is scrambled eggs," she said.

"I was just kind of floundering career-wise, because I wasn't making things I was passionate about. I was just kind of working, you know. And it was really clear that audiences weren't responding to anything I was putting out there," she added.
