Renshaw decides to give T20 a bash

"THE Turtle" plans to come out of his shell this Big Bash League campaign.

Known for his slow, measured approached to batting, hence his 'Turtle' moniker, Test opener Matt Renshaw will up the ante when he makes his debut for the Brisbane Heat this summer.

The 21-year-old has signed his first contract with the franchise after biting the bullet and deciding to have a crack at the shortest version of the game at domestic level.

"I'll probably have to go to the nets and slog a few before I go out there so I'm a bit warmed up. It's going to be interesting," he said.

"I think down the track I would love to play all three forms for Australia."

Until then Renshaw will look to get among the runs in the next two Shield matches and shore up his spot for the Ashes, starting on home soil at the Gabba on November 23.

"I haven't spoken to selectors but obviously everyone wants more runs before that first Test just to really confirm their place," he said after throwing his wicket away twice in the Shield win over Victoria, making 17 and 16.

National selector Mark Waugh described his form as "patchy", although Renshaw did strike two half-centuries for the Queensland Bulls during the recent JLT One-Day Cup.

Renshaw will be joined in the Heat squad by fellow new arrival in Queensland, paceman Brendan Doggett.

The 22-year-old made his Sheffield Shield debut last week, becoming the first indigenous player to represent Queensland since the 1980s.
