Lucky escape for workshops welder

LATEST: A Redbank rail workshops employee has escaped injury, despite a welding explosion that caused serious damage to a factory this afternoon.

The worker was oxy-welding at the General MacArthur Place site when the explosion occurred about 1pm.

Police said there was an explosion which engulfed the man's work area, but didn't burn long enough to cause injuries.

It did cause extensive damage to a section of the building, however.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, with the building evacuated as firefighters worked to extinguish a fire at the back of the workshop.

A Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said the fire was out by 1.45pm, with firefighters using fans to expel a large amount of smoke.

Damage was confined to one area of the building, and all people were accounted for.

Speaking to Cr Paul Tully, a worker from the area said emergency services were quick to respond and ensure the safety of everyone in the street.

"The firies turned up and there were some chemicals and plastics alight and some forklifts with gas bottles, so for everyone's safety they've evacuated the surrounding sheds and asked us all to keep a safe distance until they can put the fire out and make it safe for everyone to go back," he said
