A FISHING trawler has smashed into rocks at Duranbah Beach and sunk this afternoon.

The incident began unfolding about 5pm (NSW).

A Marine Rescue spokesperson said it's believed the occupants of the trawler managed to climb to safety on the rocks before rescuers arrived.

The boat then sunk and has been breaking up under water.

The spokesperson said it's believed all people involved are safe.

It's unknown how many fisherman were on board.

The trawler went down on the northern end of the rock wall, near the river mouth.
