Update 4.16pm: RESCUE crews have arrived at the site of a reported helicopter crash in the Whitsundays.

Four people on board are believed to be safe, after the small helicopter crashed into the ocean 30km north of Hayman Island this afternoon, however this has not yet been confirmed.

Whitsunday Water Police said the aircraft appeared to have landed upright on its pontoon, and was currently floating.

There is currently a rescue aircraft above the crash and an additional rescue boat is on the way.

CQ Rescue reported the crash about 3.50pm and deployed a rescue crew toward Barb Reef for a search and rescue mission immediately.

Water police have already notified the Australian Transport Safety Bureau and once the passengers are retrieved it's believed the aircraft will be salvaged.
