Rescue effort for tiny joey

A TINY joey was rescued last night in a combined effort from community members.

Jamie Wickham found the young joey on the side of the road at Elbow Valley and asked around for local wildlife experts on social media.

Animal and wildlife enthusiast Brendon Mead rushed to pick up the joey and deliver him to safe hands.

"If we waited until today to go and get him he might not have made it through the night because we don't know when he last ate," Mr Mead said.

"Being that young they're still relying on their mum for food and warmth so I just put him in my jumper for body warmth.

"When I got there, Molly had already made up a bowl of food for him so he was getting fed straight away."

According to Mr Mead, the joey looked to be about two or three weeks old and was just beginning to grow stubble hair.

It is likely that the joey's mother was hit by a car, leaving him to fend for himself.

Mr Mead said he was interested in wildlife care, but was still learning how to handle joeys.

Molly the wildlife handler had another joey in care at the time - so the little fella had a friend.
