Rescued anglers go shopping
RESCUED fishermen splashed out the cash this morning for some new gear – but not of the angling kind.
The guys, many from Woolongong in NSW, made a shopping trip to Rockhampton’s Kmart where they stocked up on clothing and living essentials, such as toothbrushes.
Fortunately they’d been able to salvage their wallets before the charter fishing boat Bell Cay capsized in violent seas off the Swain Reefs early yesterday.
After a dramatic day in which they finally returned to the mainland shortly before 8pm last night, the men were in good spirits this morning as they retold their ordeal.
Many had made the trek to City Centre Plaza from The Criterion Hotel, where they are staying, barefoot and in borrowed clothes.
Trip organiser Peter Taylor said they literally had no belongings left.
Peter said they’d lost about $25,000 worth of fishing tackle with the boat.
The guys were spending a few hundred dollars each at the shop on shoes, underwear, shirts, jeans, toothbrushes, bags and jumpers.
Most will return to their home towns on Saturday morning, with flights being organised this morning.
“We’re trying to sort everything out this morning,” Peter said.
“I’d just like to thank everyone for the help they’ve given us, including the owner of the boat and the skipper, the water police and Leigh Turnbull from The Cri.”
