Respected journalist dies in crash
ON Wednesday morning, Shaun Kelly left his wife and young daughter in Rockhampton to start a new chapter of their lives in Canberra.
Tragically, the Kelly family reunion that was planned for later this week in the nation's capital will never be.
Mr Kelly, 46, died after a devastating car crash on the Leichhardt Highway on Wednesday afternoon between Wandoan and Miles.
He died at the scene after the sedan he was driving collided with a truck coming in the opposite direction about midday, halfway between the two towns.
The 37-year-old truck driver was airlifted in a critical condition to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.
Mr Kelly, the former state news director at WIN Television, finished work there last week and was travelling to Canberra to set up a new home for his family after his wife accepted a work promotion.
News of the doting family man, sports lover and respected journalist's passing sent shockwaves through the Rockhampton community with tributes starting to flow on internet social media forums including Twitter on Wednesday night.
It was clearly evident from the emotional messages posted that he will be missed by family, friends, colleagues and former colleagues across Rockhampton.
Today, close family and friends were still grief-stricken and did not want to make comment.
Mr Kelly was described as a genuine, lovely man and amazing mentor whose life was taken too soon.
He is survived by wife Trish and daughter Bridget, who turns four next month.
Police are investigating the crash.
