Rio Tinto investment to secure refineries future

THE future of Gladstone's bauxite refineries has been secured for the next four decades with Rio Tinto announcing a massive new Cape York mine.

On Friday Rio Tinto announced a $2.6 billion new bauxite mine near Weipa - much of which will be sent to Gladstone's two refineries.

Speaking at the announcement on Friday Rio Tinto chief Sam Walsh said the new mine would ensure the long term security of about 2000 jobs in Gladstone.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the project was one of the biggest investments outside of the south east corner "in many years".

"Once operational, the Amrun mine will support the continued employment of the current 1400 strong workforce based at Weipa, as well as more than 2000 employees based at the Yarwun and Queensland Aluminium Limited refineries in Gladstone that are fed with bauxite from Cape York," she said. - APN NEWSDESK
