Road riders to trial new criterium course this weekend

CYCLING: Rockhampton road cyclists will saddle up for their final hit-out of the year on Sunday.

The Rockhampton Cycling Club will run the criterium over a new circuit at Gracemere, which will take in Foster St, Macquarie St, Somerset Rd and Capricorn St.

Organiser Matthew Tennent said the move to Gracemere was prompted by growing vehicle congestion on the club's regular circuit in and around Parkhurst.

"We're keen to trial this course and see how it goes. If it really takes off, we're looking at running an extended criterium series next year,” he said.

"We've only had about three weeks to put it together but we've had quite a few riders say they will be there, including some from Gladstone. If we could get 50-something riders across the four grades (A, B, C and D), that would be a good turnout.”

Tennent said the Rockhampton club was looking at several different avenues to attract new members to its ranks.

Riders interested in Sunday's event can nominate on the day. Sign-on is at 7am at the starting point on Foster St, with racing from 7.30am.
