Roads and tourism a focus ahead of election
COVERING a division that makes up more than half of the Banana Shire (28577sq km), division 6 Banana Shire Council councillor Terri Boyce has a laser focus on our region's roads.
Cr Boyce will stand again for division 6 in the March 28 Local Government elections after being elected to council at the 2017 by-election.
Cr Boyce believes that roads are a priority for residents in her division.
"We still have some rural ratepayers who don't have an all weather road to their property boundary," Cr Boyce said.
"I have pushed for more funding for council's roads, replacement kerb and channelling, where needed, regravelling of several roads, further bitumen seal on the Deearne Road and Bauhinia Downs Road.
"I am constantly lobbying Main Roads for maintenance and improvements on the Leichhardt Highway (passing lane and turning lane into the Isla Gorge National Park, Theodore - Cracow Road (including upgrading of bridges), Roma Road and upgrade of Sandy Creek Bridge."
Cr Boyce advocates for a fair distribution of funding across the Banana Shire.
She said the many communities had different priorities for their district and this should be recognised in the budget.
"I would like council to plan to accommodate the growing number of tourists visiting each year which would diversify the income coming into the towns," Cr Boyce said.
"A large proportion of residents in our small towns are elderly people who need health support and need infrastructure to support an easy access around the towns."
Despite having served the shortest time as councillor on the Banana Shire Council, Cr Boyce said if she was elected she hoped to use her 'good relationship' with fellow councillors to tackle a number of projects for her division.
"Major improvements on the state owned roads, further replacements to kerb and channelling where needed in the towns, further footpaths so the elderly can access the shops without having to travel on the main roads, improve parking around the shop precincts," Cr Boyce said.
"The replacement of the Taroom Pool Building prior to the next season opening.
"Secure funding to improve the Wide Water, Glebe Weir recreation facilities, improvements at Junction Park including new boat ramp, Centennial Footpath in Theodore and planning for improvements at Isla Gorge National Park."
