Rockhampton council making plans around an evacuation centre
ROCKHAMPTON Regional Council is making plans around an evacuation centre should a need arise. The location of such a centre is yet to be announced.
The evacuation centre would be supported by Red Cross and Salvation Army volunteers.
This volunteer base is already significantly stretched with the management of incidents in Bundaberg and the message to people is to go to family friends as a first port of call - the evacuation centre should be a last resort.
The evacuation centre would offer very basic shelter and basic services and facilities and will not have the capacity to cater to pets. Residents are urged to make arrangements with friends or family for pet care.
There will be no forced evacuations but police and SES will continue to patrol and talk to people in effected areas and discuss their options so that people can make their own informed decisions
If you do make a decision to leave your home, please remember to bring important personal documents, any medicines, clothes and smaller quantities of bedding for example pillows and blankets. If you have children please consider smaller books or toys to keep them occupied.
The evacuation would be available for short term accommodation only.
Anyone wishing to make enquiries regarding the evacuation centre should contact LDCC on 1300 652 659
Those needing hardship assistance should contact the Department of Communities on 1800 173 349.
