Rocky foodies flock to facebook page with almost 1000 likes

AFTER tasting the fresh produce and experiencing the strong food culture on a trip to Tasmania, Sarah McBryde found a new appreciation for cooking.

The Rockhampton mother said she became part of the Facebook group, Rockhampton Food Rater which has seen a huge growth in members, to around 1000.

"I joined the group last year and its good because you get to review local establishments on the good and the bad," Sarah said.

"My favourite place to eat in Rockhampton would have to be Blue Truffle. Just the quality of freshness and they only use seasonal ingredients. My favourite dish there is the mushroom and green bean salad with a house pesto."

Appreciating good food as well as making it, one of Sarah recipes appeared in the national magazine, Super Food Ideas and has a five-star rating on the Best Recipes website.

"It's called Colcannon and it's a cabbage and potato side dish," she said.

"I submitted it as part of a competition from Super Food Ideas and then got to go down to Sydney in April for a photo shoot with the other four winners, which were for a promotional ad in their magazine. I then saw my recipe appear in their magazine in the August issue, which was very exciting."

With all the reality TV shows on cooking, we asked Sarah what she thought about the average home cooks more accustomed to finer foods.

"I do watch shows like My Kitchen Rules and I just enjoy it rather than try and get cooking tips or anything because it is so edited and produced," she said. "But I just love good foods in general and I think the food rater group is great because I like being able to give the feedback and some chefs on there actively seek it."

Sarah's Colcannon Recipe

Ingredients

1kg potatoes, peeled and chopped

1/a white cabbage, shredded

1 cup of milk

30g butter

4 shallots, chopped

2 rashers middle bacon, chopped

Method

Place potatoes in saucepan and boil until tender

Place milk and shallots in saucepan and boil. Remove form heat.

Mash potatoes and add hot milk mix.

Whisk using wooden spoon to ensure smooth consistency.

Cook butter, cabbage and bacon in hot frying pan until soft.

Stir cabbage mix through mashed potato before serving.
