Ditching Rocky's bull is 'recipe for disaster'

NOEL Sorensen (pictured) wants Rockhampton to stop pretending it's something it's not.

The Principal of Adz Power Agencies says proposals to ditch the bull statue featured at Rockhampton's entrance is ill-founded and a recipe for disaster on the back of massive public backlash to the move.

Rockhampton Regional Council saw a report on Tuesday which recommended the iconic Yeppen roundabout be redeveloped as part of a region-wide "rebranding" project in an effort to diversify the city's profile.

But Mr Sorensen said losing the bull would mean losing the region's greatest marketing asset.

"I certainly wouldn't be taking away the nationally and internationally recognised bull statues," he said.

"You can use other methods to promote the diversity of the region, it's ridiculous.

"People certainly come to Rocky because of the beef, they don't come here as a tourist destination and that's something they need to face up to."

Mr Sorensen said Rockhampton was, and would always remain, a central centre and hub to "real" tourist destinations across Central Queensland.

Instead of focusing on a rebranding, Mr Sorensen said the region's bodies should be focusing on ensuring the correct facilities were on hand to fill the service role effectively.

"Tourists go to the beach or the outback, not Rockhampton," he said.

"We need to keep people here for the nights stay by giving them things like one, great transport options; two, good accommodation and three, a convention centre.

"Rockhampton is the Beef Capital of Australia, run with that strength. Look at what the Beef Expo does for the city every three years, should we be embarrassed by that?"
