Proposed South Rockhampton Flood Levee cost rises to $48m

THE SOUTH Rockhampton Flood Levee is now set to cost $48 million, up $9 million on original estimates.

But Rockhampton mayor Margaret Strelow (pictured) says the council's contribution will remain fixed at $13 million, as it continues to lobby the State and Federal governments to fund the rest of the cost.

Cr Strelow announced the cost increase yesterday as she revealed the final alignment of the levee.

She said the $39 million was derived from the review of the 1992 alignment, which was multiplied out into today's dollars.

"The new figure is based on the detailed alignment design and takes into account some significant expenses," she said.

"We are lodging our applications on the basis that the contribution from Rockhampton regional ratepayers will be fixed at $13 million.

"At this level, and with the proposed special rates to cover the vast majority of the money, there is no to little impact on our financial viability."

Cr Strelow said the final alignment was similar to that originally proposed in 1992 but the levee now skirts around sensitive wetlands and follows Fiddes St for much of its length.

Although not yet "shovel ready", the plans allowed the community to get a clearer understanding of exactly what was proposed with the location of detention basins and spillways and pumping stations identified.

Cr Strelow said the final hydrology showing the increased water outside the levee was not yet available.

"We know very generally where the extra water is going to be and it hasn't changed significantly since the beginning of the project," she said.

"But every centimetre matters and the original project plan was that the mapping would be checked by a second firm before releasing the information publicly.

"We are very keen to follow the process carefully. As soon as we have the final hydrology we will make those maps available."
