Rocky Professor awarded Science Champion award for research
ROCKHAMPTON Professor David Swain is the first Central Queenslander to be awarded the Science Champion award for his research into precision livestock management.
Queensland Premier Campbell Newman and Queensland Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts Ian Walker presented the award to Professor Swain at the Yeppoon Town Hall last month.
The CQ University Professor of Agriculture was presented the award for his ground-breaking research in management tools for northern beef production systems which will help lift the beef industry's reproductive process.
"We use a range of technologies to try and improve the management of cattle," he said.
"We focus on the individual animal, so we use radio tracking technologies to track cattle's movement around paddocks and we use that information to understand their behaviours to see what that means in terms of their physiology.
Professor Swain is also included in the online 'Wall of Fame' established by the Queensland Government to recognise Science and Innovation Champions.
