Stephen's power of laughter
ROCKHAMPTON'S Stephen Power has a wicked sense of humour and it shows immediately.
“When life gives you lemons, find someone with a paper cut,” was a punchy one-liner he delivered at the State Class Clowns finals in Brisbane last week.
It helped earn him the runner-up prize and he now has the chance to compete at the national finals next month in Melbourne.
He cites local comedian Steve Hughes and UK comedian Ross Noble as his favourites and has a straightforward reason to the question of “Why stand-up”?
“I like it because it's not much work ... You get to sleep in in the morning.
“It's better than having a real job.”
The Grade 10 Emmaus College student has shown considerable initiative in the pursuit of a career in comedy and opened for Akmal Saleh in Gladstone after he contacted him for tips and was offered a three-minute spot in the line-up.
Rockhampton Regional Council Community Development and Customer Service Committee chairwoman Rose Swadling said his achievement was a “positive reflection on the youth in the region".
“This is a wonderful opportunity for Stephen and who knows what doors might open up for him as ... some class clowns have gone on to careers in comedy.”
