Rocky man to 'close the gap'

LONG-term indigenous Rockhampton man Ron Weatherall will head the Queensland government’s efforts to close the gap of disadvantage between indigenous people and the wider community.

Yesterday it was announced Mr Weatherall had been appointed as Queensland’s Deputy Director-General of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services.

A Kamilaroi man, he will lead work in key policy areas such as reconciliation and closing the gap.

Mr Weatherall was the regional director of employment and indigenous initiatives for Central Queensland and the Wide Bay.

He is a member of the Queensland Indigenous Education Consultative Committee, the Kamilaroi Traditional Owner Group and was founding chairman of the Central Queensland Domestic Violence Service in Rockhampton.

Mr Weatherall moved to Rockhampton 20 years ago.

Read how Ron’s tough childhood and poor upbringing inspired him to make a difference for his people in Thursday’s Morning Bulletin.
