'Rocky must get stadium'
LOCAL identity and avid rugby league fan Baron Large shares his view on the CQ NRL bid after two state politicians signed the petition during Beef Week and a speech by bid chairman Geoff Murphy at Saturday night's Beef Ball.
I know there are still a few knockers and negative people who think CQ will never get its own NRL side.
Each to their own.
There are people out there who think Rocky is a dull and boring place to live in.
If they turn off their TV, go into their front yard, open the gate and walk onto the footpath, they will realise Rocky doesn't stop at the end of their street and isn't like it was 40 years ago.
If Rocky had a 22,000-seat stadium we would see international sides not only in rugby league but rugby union, soccer, and any other sport which is played out in the fresh air.
We will see international bands and other entertainers who now fly over Rocky to cities which have the facilities to complement them.
CQ needs this stadium more than it needs an NRL side, but without the team you won't get the stadium.
When I was young and said to my mum: "I've got nothing to do", she would say: "Go outside and make your own fun.
That is why I will do everything I can to make this dream a reality, not only for me but for the thousands of sports fans who will get hours of enjoyment over many years when this stadium is built.
The older I get, the more sure I am it will be a Broncos NRL, Dolphins Qld Cup, (Comets next season) and Fitzroys Rocky grand final winners.
