Rocky hockey reps in line for state selection

THE 2015 hockey season may be over but training continues in earnest for six of Rockhampton's talented players.

Douglas Buckley (pictured), Deyonte Fraser, Clinton McKay, Dylan Plummer and Jackson Willie have been named in the 2016 Queensland under-21 men's squad.

Ainslee Deeth is Rockhampton's sole representative in the under-21 women's squad.

Trials to finalise the team for the nationals will be held in February next year.

Buckley, 18, moved to Brisbane this year to study and played with the University of Queensland in the Brisbane Hockey League.

He said it was a big step up from the Rockhampton competition.

"It is much faster and more intense, and there are no easy games," he said.

Buckley said the achievements of Rockhampton's three current Australian players - Mark Knowles, Jamie Dwyer and Matt Gohdes - were a great motivation and inspiration.

He hopes that he too will wear the green and gold at the elite level - but he is not getting ahead of himself.

"It's definitely in the back of my mind but I know I just have to keep performing," Buckley said.

"But first things first. I really want to make the Queensland team for the nationals so I'll continue to train hard and ensure I'm in peak form fitness-wise when the trials come around.

"Everything has stepped up and I have to step up as well. I have to keep improving."
