Rocky's New Sensation?

MOVE over Tom Petty, Rockhampton mayoral candidate Dominic Doblo has Michael Hutchence and INXS on his mind.

The outspoken political hopeful quipped yesterday he wanted to be Rockhampton's "New Sensation".

The Morning Bulletin had earlier reported Mr Doblo denying the reason he'd removed his campaign jingle was due to copyright concerns between the tune and Petty's song, I Won't Back Down.

Following a front-page article in the paper, Mr Doblo was quickly on the airwaves, where he was asked by 4RO morning show host Michael J Bailey if his jingle was a rip-off?

"It's pretty close," Dominic said.

"I don't think it's that bad.

"In another two weeks we'll start another jingle, INXS's New Sensation."

He talked up his public relations skills adding, if elected, he'd save ratepayers a couple of million dollars by dismantling Rockhampton Regional Council's PR department, which was too big.

And in a colourful five-minute performance, Mr Doblo called on the community to get behind the CQ NRL Bid.

He proposed building a new high school at Gracemere, presumably where the students at Rockhampton State High School could go.

Then the site of the South Rockhampton school could be used to develop a sporting school of excellence with top-class facilities.

He said the school would be for students who wanted to make sport their career.

Mr Doblo said not all children wanted "to be a lawyer or brain surgeon" and some wanted to do sports.
