Rogers close to claiming berth amid ironwoman elite

SURF LIFESAVING: Noosa Heads' talent Lana Rogers can essentially shore up a spot in the Nutri-Grain Finals Series with a strong result in the third round of the Nutri-Grain Ironwoman Series at Fingal Bay this weekend.

The 20-year-old surprised some pundits with her displays in the opening two events, capturing third place at Alexandra Headland and fourth place at Newport, to be leading the qualifying standings with four events remaining.

Now, she's poised for another strong outing.

"Another good result here would probably lock her into a (Finals Series) spot,” coach Darren Mercer said.

"You never know until it's all over and done with but she's been racing really well and is strong.”

With competitors to tally their three best results with the top-five to join the already-confirmed 13 elite athletes in the Finals Series at Surfers Paradise in February.

Rogers, who hails from Rockhampton, has proved a revelation with her enthusiasm and determination in the opening couple of rounds.

"She's talented on the swim, that's her strength and her board was going really well last year but she's really picked up the ski,” Mercer said.

Rogers is among a host of Noosa Heads competitors who have travelled to New South Wales for the weekend's carnival, which includes an array of events.

"What we've tried to do this year with the Noosa crew is give some of the younger ones that experience and travel and competition outside the Sunshine and Gold coasts,” Mercer said.

Among them is Cooper Williams, who will compete in round three of the Nutri-Grain Ironman Series race.

One who won't compete is Darren's daughter Jordan Mercer.

The reigning Ironwoman Series champion is sidelined through injury, as previously reported by the Daily.
